Vulva Project.
As a woman growing up In Poland, I was confronted and pigeonholed by certain gender stereotypes that pushed me to question the belief system I was brought up with. I come from Catholic family who have many fundamental beliefs that I disagree with, but who are also supportive and proud - leaving me to question how these fundamental beliefs can take effect on individuals in regard to their surroundings. I believe that opening up a conversation through art can help spark a moment of understanding and recognition in people who may not try to understand those who are different from them because they have been taught that a way or life is fundamentally sinful or wrong. I do not believe that a political agenda is at all separate from being a maker.
I feel like slowly, step by step the Polish government is taking women's freedom and feeling of empowerment. Putting us in place of human incubators without any choice. Even in the international dictionary of anatomical terms, I learned that the Latin term for the vulva — including the inner and outer labia, the clitoris and the pubic mound — was pudendum. Translation: the part to be ashamed of. There is no equivalent word for male genitals. I am tired of being ashamed of the physicality with which I was born. I am tired of the government taking away my choice and expecting to be quiet about it. It is not only about inequality of women but also LBGTQ groups.
